Dietary Suggestions for Liver Invading Stomach

When Liver Qi stagnate's, it tends to reach into other organ systems and cause problems there as well. One common target is the Stomach, which plays an important role in digestion. When Liver Qi invades the Stomach, one may belch, hiccup, feel nauseated, or vomit; and in very severe cases, develop ulcers or gastritis. All of these symptoms are exacerbated by stress.

Dietary adjustment must be very balanced because foods that smooth Liver energies tend to be slightly spicy or acidic in nature and can upset the stomach. Likewise, foods that calm the stomach tend to congest Liver Qi.

Beneficial Foods:
Barley, brown sugar, button mushroom, carp, celery, chestnut, corn, date, ginger, kumquat, mango, mung bean, peanut, sweet orange, white fungus

Beneficial Teas:
Mint, orange peel

Avoid:
Alcohol, greasy foods, cayenne, chili peppers, cinnamon, clove, coffee, tobacco.

With heat symptoms, be sure to take all spicy foods (like garlic, ginger, fennel, etc) in moderation.
